Kasen-an Seni Onsen Iwanoyu

Entering Kasen-an Seni Onsen Iwanoyu is not unlike stepping into an art museum or gallery.
As you pass through the wooden gate and stroll leisurely through the grounds, the hustle and bustle of daily life slips away and you are surrounded by the sound of the flowing river, the rustling of trees in the wind, and the gentle fragrance of the forest. Each day spent at Kasen-an Seni Onsen Iwanoyu brings such little touches of luxury, and more.

This inn, which first opened over 60 years ago, is located about 20 minutes by car from Nagano and about 20 minutes from Suzaka Station on the Nagano Line. It is built on a mountainside and features a curious layout that naturally draws you out from your room and into the open-air corridors. The inn has many reading alcoves and terraces that inspire you to put away your phone to write a letter, or to spend some time with a book. A natural sense of calm will wash over you.

Three types of guest rooms are available: Senjutei, Sengotei, and Senzantei. The open-air corridors blend seamlessly with their surroundings, making you feel as though you are strolling along a forest path. Although at times exposed to rain or snow, the corridors have only a roof and no glass windows or enclosing walls, allowing guests to fully and naturally experience the four seasons. The floors are heated, and warm haori coats are provided in winter—thoughtful details that let guests experience nature as it is, while still ensuring a comfortable stay.

Iwanoyu places great importance on living in harmony with nature while ensuring guests’ safety. This reflects the inn’s distinctive version of omotenashi hospitality: “to provide a space that enhances the power of natural healing.”

Meals are served at Shin-zen-an, a riverside restaurant where all dining rooms are private. Dinner and breakfast can be enjoyed at a time of your own choosing, reflecting the inn’s commitment to letting each guest enjoy their stay at their own pace. The dishes are prepared right before your eyes, naturally sparking conversation among you and your companions.

Reservations are accepted by telephone only. Kasen-an Seni Onsen awaits your arrival, and after your departure awaits your return, endeavoring to be your “home away from home” in Japan.
