Kuroge Wagyu (Japanese Black Beef) is one of Japan’s most renowned delicacies, consistently ranking among the top foods visitors from overseas hope to try. Often, it is enjoyed as steak or prepared yakiniku-style.
Kyoto Niku Kappou Miyata restaurant serves only the choicest Kuroge Wagyu cuts from cattle raised in Kyoto—a beef that rivals other world-famous varieties, such as Kobe and Matsusaka Beef. Here, you can enjoy a course-style meal that features a series of dishes prepared using the refined techniques of traditional Japanese cuisine.
Kyoto Niku Kappou Miyata’s chef began by learning the fundamentals of Japanese cuisine at a renowned hot spring inn. He then went on to refine his skills at famous teppanyaki restaurants in Kobe and Kyoto, mastering the secrets of preparing delicious meat. Eventually, he opened his own restaurant with a desire to serve beef dishes crafted using the techniques of traditional Japanese cuisine.
The restaurant is located in a traditional Kyoto-style townhouse built in 1890. The interior has been renovated, but the original pillars and beams have been preserved, so the building retains its traditional charm. It has twelve counter seats arranged around an open kitchen, ensuring an intimate and engaging dining experience. You can savor each of the dishes as they are served one after another, all the while watching the chef prepare the next delicacy to come right in front of you.
The dishes that compose the course are entirely left to the chef’s expert discretion. It begins with an appetizer featuring Kuroge Wagyu beef, followed by a soup that harmoniously blends Japanese soup stock with the umami flavor of beef. There are also Chateaubriand grilled over high-grade charcoal, beef cutlets, and rice cooked in a clay pot together with beef. Among the many delicacies, the beef sandwiches served with tartar sauce made using shibazuke pickles (pickles with red shiso) are especially popular. You can also choose from a wide selection of drinks to enjoy with your meal, including wine from Kyoto, Japanese whiskey, and shochu.
The restaurant is a short eight-minute walk north of Kyoto Station, and stands just west of Higashi Hongan-ji Temple. It is tucked away down a narrow alley between two houses that is just wide enough for a single person to pass through. Look for the lantern at the entrance to the restaurant.
While Kuroge Wagyu beef is, of course, as delicious as steak or yakiniku, Kyoto Niku Kappou Miyata offers a more refined and creative approach to enjoying this prized beef. Its varied selection of Kuroge Wagyu beef dishes is sure to become a memorable culinary adventure to talk about back home.
