JAPANESE HANKO

Hanko (personal signature seals) are an essential part of Japanese culture. They are used by everyone in Japan to officially verify their identity and intentions. This unique item is a true symbol of Japanese identity and seeing them made is a fascinating chance for visitors from abroad to experience Japanese tradition.

KAMAKURAHANKO is an 80-year-old shop currently run by the third generation of the same family. It is located just a three-minute walk from the West Exit of Kamakura Station. Its master craftsman and artist, Mr. Tsukino, holds the highest national qualification in his field, First-Class Seal Engraver, a title held by only about 100 people in the entire country. He has received numerous awards for his work, and many prominent figures—from company executives and sumo champions to Olympic athletes and actors—come to his shop to have auspicious seals created. At KAMAKURAHANKO, every step, from customer service to carving and delivery, is handled in-house to ensure the highest quality.

The shop also offers exclusive hanko carving workshops for overseas visitors, accepting just one group per day. These workshops are a great way to learn about the history of seals, the various types, and the carving process. Many visitors have said that experiencing this unique aspect of Japanese culture firsthand was the highlight of their trip. Another popular option is to have a custom seal made on the spot, which you can pick up later the same day after sightseeing in Kamakura. For those who can’t visit in person, seals can be purchased through KAMAKURAHANKO’s online shop. You can choose to have your name carved in Japanese characters like katakana or kanji, or even create your own custom design.

The most popular type of seal among international visitors is the Kamakura-bori hanko. This traditional local craft, officially recognized as “Japan Heritage,” uses Buddhist carving techniques that are influenced by Zen, a school of Buddhism that seeks enlightenment through meditation and a simple life. Each seal features an exquisitely carved pattern, rich color, and a heartfelt design, representing the pinnacle of hanko as an art form. These unique and artistic seals can only be purchased in Kamakura and are highly regarded by international visitors for their beauty and Zen-like qualities.

As a master artisan, Tsukino can only carve five seals per day, so a reservation is required to visit the store. During your visit, he will share stories about the history of seals, discuss different materials, and explain the meanings of the characters, all before proposing a design just for you. Each seal is then meticulously carved with great care and dedication.
