PORTOM INTERNATIONAL HOKKAIDO is a luxury hotel situated on the fourth to eighth floors of the International Terminal of New Chitose Airport, which is commonly known as the “Gate to Hokkaido.” Beyond the hotel entrance isan elevator hall for the exclusive use of hotel guests; the reception is located on the fourth floor, and 171 guest rooms make up the fifth to eighth floors. In stark contrast to the bustle of endless comings and goings of the airport, the hotel is quiet, and this quietness serves to heighten expectations for the stay to come.

Designed around the concept of “A Journey to Discover Our World and Enrich Yours,” PORTOM INTERNATIONAL HOKKAIDO is a fusion of the classic and modern. The lobby is lined with portraits of Ainu chieftains, while each guest room is decorated with original woodblock prints from Hokusai Manga by world-famous painter Katsushika Hokusai. Pervaded with the beauty of Japanese culture and art, the hotel is akin to an art gallery in many respects.

The Guest Salon is no exception. Here, valuable artworks from the Edo period are on display, including Imari ware porcelain, as well as prints and paintings by Utagawa Hiroshige, Ito Jakuchu, and Hakuin Ekaku. The hotel also features installations of dyed silks and is decorated with traditional Japanese plaster-work and gold-lacquer techniques.

For dinner, guests may choose between Japanese cuisine at Shimogamo-Saryo Kitanohanare, which is operated by an esteemed Kyoto establishment with a history dating back more than 160 years, and a fusion of modern and classic French cuisine at TATERU YOSHINO. Both restaurants serve exquisite dishes made with fresh ingredients sourced from the vast natural landscape of Hokkaido. After dinner, guests can unwind at the Bar, perhaps by watching aircraft take off and land, or by making use of the dedicated cigar room.
