The restaurant’s origins go back seven years to when Chef Uchino rented out a yakiniku (BBQ meat) restaurant after hours to open a late-night diner in the Kitashinchi area of Osaka that offered an à la carte menu focused on rice and noodles. The menu was a hit with Japanese gourmets, and two years ago, Chef Uchino decided to open his current restaurant and shift to multi-course meals of around ten dishes. Today, his restaurant is more popular than ever.

SHOKUDO UCHINO’s menu is based on three principles: making the most of seasonal ingredients, retaining a stylish yet casual atmosphere, and serving food that goes well with alcohol. The restaurant strongly emphasizes seasonality, while providing stylish, delicious food that incorporates elements of home cooking.

A menu item named otona no gyudon (beef rice bowl for adults) is a particular hit and accounts for much of the restaurant’s popularity. It is a dish of freshly cooked rice topped with thin slices of shoulder cut beef and served with an egg yolk to be mixed with the other ingredients.
