Kyukaruizawa HOTEL OTOWA NO MORI

Located on the border of Nagano and Gunma Prefectures, Karuizawa is one of Japan’s premier highland resorts. The area began to become famous in 1886, when a Canadian missionary visited Karuizawa and, charmed by its beautiful nature and scenery, built a second home there. Approximately 1,000 meters above sea level, the area is renowned for its cool climate, natural beauty, and convenience as a place to escape the summer heat of the city.

Kyukaruizawa is a district of Karuizawa around one kilometer north of Karuizawa Station on the Hokuriku Shinkansen Line. Tucked away within its larch forests is the Kyukaruizawa HOTEL OTOWA NO MORI. The classical exterior of this distinguished and historic hotel blends in harmoniously with its rich natural surroundings. A place where time moves quietly and unhurriedly, the hotel still lovingly uses the same furniture as when it was founded. It has 49 guest rooms, mostly for two guests, but also to accommodate three or four.

The hotel has two restaurants and a café. Restaurant KEIKI serves multiple-course French cuisine prepared with local ingredients sourced from Nagano Prefecture. It also boasts an ample selection of wines, ranging from local Shinshu wines to labels from France and Italy. Charcoal Grill Otowatei is a “yakitori kaiseki” restaurant where guests can savor delicious grilled chicken. With only ten counter seats, it has a relaxed, hideaway-style ambiance. The restaurant serves dishes of seasonal flavors carefully grilled over a charcoal fire, together with carefully selected sakes. It is truly one of Karuizawa’s hidden gems. Café OTOWA serves fresh cakes handmade by the hotel’s pâtissier using locally sourced eggs and fruit. The hotel’s two restaurants and café are also open to non-staying guests, so it is best to reserve in advance.

HOTEL OTOWA NO MORI also has a wedding chapel that is used by brides and grooms from across Japan. Further details are available on the hotel’s dedicated weddings page.

The area around Karuizawa Station is busy with tourists, many from overseas, drawn to its large outlet malls, restaurants, and cafés. The Kyukaruizawa area itself is home to scenic destinations such as Mount Asama and Shiraito Falls, as well as other sightseeing spots rich in history. Karuizawa is easily accessible from Tokyo, around one hour away on the Hokuriku Shinkansen.

Kyukaruizawa HOTEL OTOWA NO MORI offers visitors to Karuizawa the finest in Japanese hospitality.
