KAMOHAN

KAMOHAN is located on the west bank of the Kamo River in Kyoto, just south of Gojo Bridge. This enchanting property has two buildings: the HANARE villa, renovated from a traditional Kyoto machiya townhouse, and the OMOYA building, recently completed in spring 2024.

The OMOYA is a three-story building with one guest room on each of the second and third floors. The interior design combines both rustic, old materials and unfinished concrete, which adds a distinctly modern feel. Perfectly coordinated antique furniture adds further sophistication. The second-floor room offers a mix of Japanese and Western styles, with a traditional tokonoma decorative alcove and a sunken hearth in the tatami mat floor. The third-floor room is in a modern Western style, with a koyamaki (umbrella pine) wooden bathtub directly connected to the living space. Both rooms provide for a relaxed stay with breathtaking, up-close views of the Kamo River. The hanging scrolls, paintings, and vases that decorate the OMOYA are even available for purchase.

The HANARE is a private villa converted from a Kyoto machiya by a carpenter well-versed in traditional sukiya-style architecture. The Japanese study, with its traditional shitajimado window that reveals the lattice framework of the wall, uses chestnut and pine recovered from an Edo-period (1603-1868) temple, creating a sense of wabi-sabi aesthetic reminiscent of a Japanese teahouse. On the second floor are a bedroom, a raised area of tatami mats, and walls decorated with Kurotani washi wallpaper. Guests can indulge in priceless luxury as they relax, enjoy the elegant setting, and gaze out over the Kamo River.

Standard stays at the OMOYA and HANARE do not include meals because many guests prefer to visit a restaurant in surrounding Kyoto, a city with countless options for traditional Japanese cuisine and luxurious dining. For those guests who choose to dine at the villa, dinner includes seafood hot pot dishes with vegetables and fresh fish from local fishmongers in a delectable dashi (fish stock) broth. Breakfast is delivered from a well-established Kyoto kappo (traditional cuisine) restaurant and can be eaten in guests’ rooms. It consists of vegetarian cuisine that highlights ingredients’ essential flavors.

KAMOHAN is near Kyoto Station and within convenient walking distance of Kiyomizu-dera Temple and the Gion district. Both its villas have kitchens and laundry machines, allowing for longer stays and a fuller experience of Kyoto. Underfloor heating ensures a warm and cozy stay even in the chilly Kyoto winter.

KAMOHAN is a luxury inn that offers an authentic and elegant Kyoto stay.
